Meta Launches AI Business Agent Globally, Offers Virtual Assistant for Every Business

Meta Platforms on Wednesday rolled out its Business Agent globally, bringing an AI-powered virtual assistant designed to automate customer interactions across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. The move, announced at the company’s Conversations 2026 conference in London, could change how Filipino small businesses manage customer service and sales online.

More than one million businesses had already tested earlier versions of Meta’s chatbots on WhatsApp and Messenger, the company said. The upgraded Business Agent now extends to Instagram and is available worldwide to companies of all sizes. It can answer customer questions, recommend products from a catalog, book appointments, qualify leads, close sales, and escalate complex issues to human staff when needed.

What this means for local businesses

For merchants across the Philippines, the Business Agent could streamline operations for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that rely heavily on messaging apps for orders and customer inquiries. Many stores, food stalls, and online sellers already use WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram to take orders and coordinate deliveries; an AI assistant could automate routine replies, confirm orders, and suggest products based on a seller’s catalog.

Meta says the agent is quick to set up, communicates in customers’ local languages, and can match a company’s preferred tone. It also provides business owners with daily summaries of interactions and insights into customer engagement. These features could help small shops make smarter stocking and marketing decisions without hiring extra staff.

Platform for custom agents and integrations

Meta also unveiled the Business Agent Platform, which lets companies build and deploy custom AI agents at scale. The platform supports integrations with services popular among Philippine merchants, Shopify for online stores, Zendesk for customer support, and regional marketplaces like Shopee. For larger enterprises, Meta offers enterprise-grade controls and compliance tools.

Pricing and rollout

Meta said the service will initially be free, with paid subscription tiers planned in the coming months. The company has indicated business AI tools are already driving significant volumes of interaction about 10 million conversations per week, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, pointing to rapid adoption.

The launch arrives amid regulatory scrutiny in Europe over competition on WhatsApp. Media reports in May said Meta had offered rival AI chatbots limited access to WhatsApp in Europe during talks with EU antitrust authorities. Observers say Meta’s emphasis on its own business AI tools, while restricting third-party general-purpose chatbots on the platform, reflects a broader strategy to keep commercial AI activity inside its ecosystem.

Digital economy experts in the Philippines say the Business Agent could lower barriers for MSMEs to adopt automation, but they caution about data privacy, platform dependence, and potential costs once subscription tiers are introduced. For many small sellers, the appeal will hinge on how well the agent handles Filipino languages and dialects, and whether integration with payment and delivery services common locally is seamless.
