Google has unveiled Gemini Spark, a new 24/7 personal AI agent that aims to move Gemini beyond chat and into autonomous task execution. Announced at Google I/O 2026, Spark is designed to handle multi-step work on a user’s behalf, even when their device is off, marking one of Google’s boldest moves yet into always-on AI assistance.
What it can do
Google says Spark is meant to act like an “active partner,” not just a chatbot. The agent can monitor recurring tasks, summarize long email threads, draft reports from meeting notes, and connect actions across multiple apps. It is powered by Google’s new Gemini 3.5 Flash model and the Antigravity 2.0 agent platform, which together are intended to make Spark faster and more capable than earlier Gemini experiences.
Spark is built to work across Google apps and selected third-party services. Google highlighted integrations with Gmail, Docs, and Slides, along with partner apps such as Canva, OpenTable, and Instacart. The company also said broader support via MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is planned to expand connectivity with other tools and services.
For users, that could mean asking Spark to scan credit card statements for hidden fees each month, compile meeting notes into a polished document, or help manage workflows across different platforms. Google stressed that the system is opt-in and will ask for approval before high-stakes actions such as sending emails or making purchases.
Rollout plans
Spark is beginning with trusted testers this week, and Google plans to open a beta to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. next week, according to CNBC. The company also says the feature will come to the Gemini desktop app this summer, where it will be able to access local files and perform tasks directly on a computer. Additional features, including browser control and the ability to send texts and emails, are expected in the coming weeks.
Bigger AI push
The Spark launch was part of a wider set of AI announcements at I/O 2026, including Gemini Omni and other upgrades to Google’s model lineup. Google said its AI systems now process more than 3.2 quadrillion tokens per month, up from 480 trillion at last year’s I/O, and the Gemini app has grown to more than 900 million monthly active users. The company also signaled the scale of its ambitions with planned capital spending of $180 billion to $190 billion this year.
