Apple Advances Smart Glasses to Challenge Meta’s Ray-Bans

Apple is testing four distinct frame designs for its upcoming AI-powered smart glasses, internally codenamed N50, aiming to outpace Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration in the growing wearables market.

The prototypes feature a large rectangular Wayfarer-style frame, a slimmer rectangular option echoing CEO Tim Cook’s look, larger oval or circular frames, and a compact refined oval design. Finishes include black, ocean blue, and light brown, using premium acetate for a durable, luxurious feel over plastic, targeting an iconic aesthetic like AirPods. Front-facing cameras in an oval pattern with indicator lights further distinguish the look.

AI Focus, No AR
These glasses skip augmented reality displays, instead relying on iPhone pairing with dual cameras (one for high-res photos/video, one for computer vision), microphones, and sensors. They handle notifications, media capture, music playback, calls, and hands-free Siri interactions enhanced for environmental awareness. This fits Apple’s three-device AI strategy, including camera AirPods and a pendant, all feeding visual context to Siri.

Prototypes reached engineering teams earlier this year, with mass production eyed for December 2026, announcement late 2026 or early 2027, and release in spring/summer 2027. Developed in-house by the Vision Products Group, no eyewear partner needed, progress accelerated with more prototypes distributed recently.

Competitive Edge
Apple’s N50 directly rivals Meta Ray-Bans with superior materials, varied styles, and deeper Apple Intelligence integration, positioning it as a sleeker Vision Pro alternative without screens or bulk. While competitors like Samsung and Google advance similar tech, Apple’s privacy-focused cameras and Siri upgrades aim to lead in everyday utility.
