300,000 Bulbs Off in Nationwide Earth Hour Push

Property giant Megaworld joined millions worldwide in this year’s Earth Hour, switching off non-essential lights across its vast network of residential, mall, hotel, and office developments.

A Collective Switch-Off
Spread across 17 townships nationwide, Megaworld turned off more than 300,000 light bulbs and equipment, saving over 50,000 kWh of energy in just one hour. The effort prevented 36,000 kilos of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from entering the atmosphere, a milestone in the company’s sustainability journey.

To put the impact in perspective, the savings equate to the work of 1,630 mature trees filtering greenhouse gases for an entire year.

“Megaworld townships are living ecosystems made up of communities that become active champions of sustainability,” said Jose Arnulfo C. Batac, Head of Sustainability at Megaworld. “Being part of Earth Hour reflects our long-term vision to build sustainable, future-ready communities that help jumpstart collective action to protect the environment and the future of every Filipino.”

Partnering for Impact
This year, Megaworld partnered with WWF-Philippines to host the country’s official Earth Hour switch-off event at ArcoVia City in Pasig, through its retail arm, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls. The initiative forms part of the company’s MEGreen program, which consolidates environmental efforts under a unified platform aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Megaworld’s sustainability push extends beyond symbolic switch-offs. Last year, the company announced its full transition to renewable energy for company-owned offices, hotels, malls, and residential properties across its townships, including Uptown Bonifacio, Eastwood City, McKinley Hill, Newport City, Southwoods City, Twin Lakes, Boracay Newcoast, and Iloilo Business Park.
