Apple’s iPhone 15 is rumored to be the last iPhone that will feature the tech giant’s proprietary Lightning port, which was introduced to consumers almost a decade ago.
Apple is rumored to scrap the Lightning port in favor of the seemingly new standard, the USB Type-C port.
This comes after the European Union has officially announced the unification of chargers, which mandates that all smartphones, tablets, and cameras, including iPhones, support charging via USB Type-C by the end of 2024.
Apple whistleblower @LeaksApplePro said that for the iPhone 15 lineup of 2023, the pro models will feature a USB Type-C charging port, while the regular iPhone 15 will continue to feature a Lightning port.
Moreover, Apple is rumored to scrap the Lightning port entirely the following year, as the whistleblower added that the iPhone 16 lineup of 2024 will feature USB Type-C ports for the regular iPhones and a “portless” iPhone 16 Pro lineup.
This marks the end of the Lightning port by 2024.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate forecasts regarding Apple devices, also said that the Cupertino company will abandon the usage of the Lightning port and switch to USB Type C by Q3 2023.
Prominent Apple Analyst Mark Gurman of Bloomberg also confirmed that Apple is testing a USB Type-C device and also added that Apple will not feature a USB Type-C iPhone before 2023. (GFB)
