President Rodrigo Duterte will not get his hands dirty in the House speakership mess involving Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, his spokesman said on Wednesday.

“Ang sabi po niya, ‘stay out tayo diyan, no comment tayo diyan.’ That’s a purely internal affair of the House of Representatives,” Palace spokesman Harry Roque said in an interview over PTV.

“Ibig sabihin po, ginagalang po ni Presidente ang naging botohan,” he added.

Cayetano offered to step down on Wednesday to give way to the term-sharing between him and Velasco brokered by Duterte.

A total of 184 lawmakers rejected Cayetano’s resignation.

Duterte met with the two lawmakers in Malacañang on Tuesday evening to discuss the “15-21” term-sharing agreement.

According to the agreement, Cayetano will assume the speakership for 15 months from the beginning of the 18th Congress last year, after which Velasco takes over the post for the next 21 months.

In his privilege speech, Cayetano disclosed that Duterte had asked Velasco to push his speakership to December this year, but the Marinduque representative declined and insisted on the Oct. 14 date. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
