Two satirical posts published by Facebook page “Mga wirdong pics part 2 electric bungalow” on June 25 and 29 said Filipino actors Jhong Hilario and Bugoy Carino, rapper Al James, and gaming content creator 2Staxx were shortlisted to cast for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film produced by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
According to the posts, Marvel and Sony considered Hilario, Carino, James, and 2Staxx to play as Miles Morales, the protagonist of the MCU Spider-verse film series.
The photos also imitated the layout used by the news website Inquirer.net on their news items. It also included photos of the personalities that insinuate blackfishing. Blackfishing refers to someone who is presented as having darker skin, as if they have black heritage, by using hairstyling or make-up.
The satirical posts included the captions, “Batang Ama vs Sample King. Congrats pinoy pride po” and “Hala ang galing ng pinoy! Proud pinoy here! #labanpilipinas2023 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭💯💯💯💯🫣🫣🫣👍👍👍💯💯💯💯💯 galing nyo”.
The two satirical posts have accumulated more than 41,000 reactions and 9,300 shares.
Sony had announced that the expected release date of the third installment of the Spider-verse film series was March 29, 2024.
While the page clearly posts comedic content, the posts in question nor the page itself were not labeled as satirical, which could mislead people, especially since it uses the name of an established news website. – Xander Lauren Cipriano
