Vlogger Dante Maravillas falsely claimed on his YouTube channel that currency would very soon be replaced by Quick Response (QR) codes, citing a story by a state news service.
Maravillas was reacting to an article published by the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in April about the Land Bank of the Philippines’s (Landbank) program to adopt QR codes in public markets and other business establishments as well as public transport.
But nowhere in the story was it mentioned that paper money and coins would be demonetized soon to pave the way for cashless transactions.
Rather, the Landbank program was meant to promote digital payments.
The PNA story stated that Landbank would join the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to make daily transactions in public markets and public transport seamless and more convenient.
Moreover, there was no BSP announcement of a demonetization of all currency to force the use of QR codes.
Maravillas, who has over 76,000 followers on his personal channel and over 97,000 subscribers on his BULLSEYE channel, also made the outlandish claim that the proliferation of QR codes was the work of the anti-Christ. — Danielle Ellyma Bayani, Hannah Corinne Garzon, Sofia Gabrielle Rosario, Mariamne Yasmin Yap
